Na Ya Boo Larng

Beanies for pre-mature babies – Biralee birthing unit
Lake Macquarie women sewing project
The project for Na Ya Boo Larng (NYBL) was a call from local women who live in the Westlake housing estate areas to using sewing as way of women coming together to learn skills and work together to create products that include Aboriginal themes for local cultural & community events.
A grant was received from Community Services & Linda Burney presented the group with a cheque for machines and a kick start to purchasing fabrics & haberdashery items.
The women attend the group weekly & design & develop their goods. They have sold goods at NAIDOC week events & a large summer community festival in Lake Macquarie (Lake Fest).
The women are learning various technical skills along with marketing, displays, seasonal range, purchasing, stocktaking, budgeting & committee training.
TAFE Outreach has partnered with the local Aboriginal justice group and a local cooperative to support the needs of this group and develop their skill to sustain this not-for-profit business.
The local Aboriginal birthing unit & an a local Aboriginal land council from outside of Lake Macquarie are currently in purchasing negotiations for the group to develop products for their groups.
To date the group of women are happy with what they have achieved and want to continue learning the skills as needed and inviting women from within the community to participate.
